After 20 years within the metals industry, City Special Metals have gained a reputation as both a company and a supplier. Not only do we have superior stock with high quality materials, but we have vast product knowledge and provide an honest and committed service.
From optical measuring equipment to metering rods for telescopes, laser cavity structures to lens and mirror cells, specialty alloys are the go-to choice for optical laser applications. We understand the precision and the accuracy that is needed when it comes to selecting materials for optical laser components and equipment, so we are on hand to help you decide.
Alloy Properties for Optical Laser
Low thermal expansion alloys are ideal for optical laser applications as the continuous stress on the equipment can commonly cause distortion. Alloys have to have dimensional stability, especially when temperatures are increased, that can be controlled and kept within specific limits.
Mechanical strength is another essential alloy property as the position of the optical element needs to be maintained through its assigned lifetime. Easy machinability and stability are also desirable properties so the alloy can be moulded into structural components whilst still being able to reliably hold its position.
Specific Alloys for Optical Laser
Invar 36 is mix of nickel and iron and is a low expansion alloy that exhibits a near zero rate of thermal expansion. As a flexible alloy that is easy to machine, it also exhibits strong performance and resilience making Invar a versatile material extremely suitable for optical laser applications.
Additionally, with dimensional stability between -100°C and 260°C, this special metal can perform reliably whether it’s optical equipment in space or operating precision laser apparatus.
