What is Inconel 625?
Inconel 625 is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum-niobium alloy with excellent corrosion resistance through the addition of molybdenum and chromium. It also has high strength capability and in particular creep strength above approximately 600°C. Depending on whether Alloy 625 Grade 1 of Alloy 625 Grade 2 is chosen, the alloy offers different performance characteristics according to the environment in which it is operating. This combination provides excellent resistance to corrosion, oxidation, and mechanical stress across demanding operating conditions.
Unlike some other high-strength alloys, alloy 625 achieves much of its strength through solid solution hardening rather than complex heat treatment. This gives the material excellent fabrication and welding characteristics while maintaining strong mechanical performance.
The alloy performs well in environments exposed to:
- Saltwater
- High pressure
- Extreme temperatures
- Corrosive chemicals
- Oxidising conditions
- Mechanical stress
These characteristics make Inconel 625 suitable for critical components where reliability and long service life are essential.
Inconel 625 Properties
Inconel 625 combines corrosion resistance with excellent mechanical strength, making it one of the most versatile nickel-based superalloys available.
Key properties include:
- Excellent corrosion resistance
- High tensile strength
- Strong fatigue resistance
- Good weldability
- Oxidation resistance
- High creep resistance
- Resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking, pitting and crevice corrosion
The alloy maintains reliable performance across both high and low temperature environments and performs particularly well in marine and chemical processing applications.
