Nickel Alloys 200 / 201 Composition

Nickel Alloy Stockist

Nickel alloys are used when components must maintain strength, resist corrosion, and perform under sustained high temperature without compromise. City Special Metals supplies a focused range of nickel alloys from UK stock or from within its supply chain, supporting engineers and procurement teams who need certified materials delivered to exact specification and on schedule.

Our materials are selected for consistency and traceability. Orders are supplied fully certified and can be precision cut to size, reducing downstream processing and helping you keep projects on track.

What is a Nickel Alloy?

Nickel alloys are materials consisting primarily of nickel, combined with elements such as chromium, molybdenum and cobalt to enhance performance. These alloying additions allow the material to maintain its properties in conditions where standard steels and aluminium alloys lose strength or degrade.

Nickel alloys are known for:

  • Strength retention at elevated temperatures
  • Resistance to oxidation and scaling
  • High corrosion resistance in aggressive environments
  • Stability under thermal cycling
  • Strong fatigue and creep resistance

This balance of properties makes them a standard choice for critical applications where reliability is essential.

Nickel Alloy Grades Available

City Special Metals supplies widely specified nickel alloy grades used across demanding industries.

Inconel 625

Inconel 625 is valued for its corrosion resistance, particularly in chloride-rich and marine environments. It has excellent resistance to pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion and has excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking. It also maintains good strength across a wide temperature range. It is commonly used in offshore, chemical processing, aerospace and marine applications.

Inconel 718

Inconel 718 is a nickel alloy designed for high strength and creep resistance at elevated temperatures. This grade can be precipitation hardened to achieve even higher strength than it has in the solution annealed condition. It is widely used in aerospace, particularly in turbine engines for aerospace and power generation. It is also used in oil & gas applications and structural components exposed to sustained heat and stress.

Alongside these, we support applications that require complementary materials such as molybdenum for high-temperature stability and 17-4PH for corrosion-resistant structural strength.

Key Properties of Nickel Alloys

Nickel alloys are specified based on performance in demanding conditions. Their core properties include:

High Temperature Strength
Nickel alloys retain mechanical strength at temperatures where conventional materials begin to soften or deform.

Corrosion Resistance
They resist attack from acids, alkalis, and saltwater environments, extending service life and reducing maintenance.

Oxidation Resistance
A stable oxide layer protects the surface during exposure to high temperatures, limiting scaling and degradation.

Creep Resistance
Nickel alloys maintain dimensional stability under long-term stress and heat, which is critical in turbine and engine components.

Fatigue Resistance
They perform well under repeated stress cycles, reducing the risk of cracking or failure over time.

Applications

Nickel alloys are used across industries where performance must remain consistent in high demanding applications

Aerospace

  • Turbine discs and blades
  • Exhaust and afterburner components
  • Structural parts exposed to high temperatures

Oil and Gas

  • Downhole tools
  • Subsea components
  • High-pressure, corrosive environments

Chemical Processing

  • Heat exchangers
  • Reactors and pipework
  • Equipment exposed to aggressive chemicals

Power Generation

  • Gas and steam turbines
  • Nuclear applications
  • High-temperature fasteners and fixtures

Forms and Supply Options

City Special Metals holds stock of nickel alloys or has access within its supply chain in multiple forms to support a wide range of applications. Product formats include:

  • Bar
  • Plate and sheet
  • Tube and pipe
  • Forgings

Products can be supplied according to specific cut dimensions and shapes including saw cutting, waterjet cutting amongst other processes removing cost and saving time for customers

Quality, Certification and Traceability

Material performance is only part of the requirement. Certification and traceability are critical, especially in regulated industries.

City Special Metals operates to AS9120 and ISO9001 standards. All nickel alloys are supplied with full certification, ensuring compliance with industry and project specifications.

Each order is traceable from source through to delivery. This provides confidence in both material integrity and documentation.

Supporting Material Selection

Nickel alloys are often specified alongside other specialist materials depending on the performance requirements of the application. Projects may require a combination of materials to manage temperature, strength, and expansion.

We regularly supply nickel alloys alongside:

●     molybdenum for high-temperature strength and low expansion

●     17-4PH for structural applications requiring corrosion resistance

●     Other specialist alloys depending on specification

This approach simplifies procurement and ensures compatibility across assemblies.

FAQs

What are nickel alloys used for?
Nickel alloys are used in high-temperature and corrosive environments such as aerospace engines, oil & gas, power generation, chemical processing equipment and marine systems.

What is the difference between Inconel 625 and Inconel 718?
Inconel 625 offers strong corrosion resistance and good weldability, whilst  Inconel 718 provides higher strength and performs better under mechanical stress and high temperatures.

Are nickel alloys corrosion-resistant?
Yes. They resist a wide range of corrosive environments, including acids, alkalis, and seawater.

Can nickel alloys be supplied cut to size?
Yes. Materials can be supplied to specific dimensions using saw cutting, waterjet cutting and other cutting processes.

Do you supply certification with materials?
All materials are supplied fully certified with full traceability.

What industries rely on nickel alloys?
Aerospace, oil and gas, chemical processing, and power generation all rely on nickel alloys for critical components.

How quickly can you deliver?
Grades are available from UK stock for rapid dispatch and we also have access to products upstream in our supply chain. Saw cut, waterjet cut or other processed products are delivered within agreed lead times.

Nickel is highly resistant to various reducing chemicals and is unexcelled in resistance to Caustic alkalies. Compared with nickel alloys, commercially pure nickel has high electrical and thermal conductivity.

It also has a high Curie temperature and good magnetostrictive properties. Annealed nickel alloys have a low hardness and good ductility and malleability. Those attributes, combined with good weldability, make the metal highly fabricable.

Nickel has a relatively low work-hardening rate, but it can be cold worked to moderately high strength levels while maintaining ductility
